Letter from the Chair

Jennifer DohertyWelcome to the FIU Athletic Training Program

Welcome to the Department of Athletic Training at Florida International University (FIU) and thank you for your interest in our programs.

The Department of Athletic Training at Florida International University offers a professional (entry-level) Master of Science in athletic training (MS-AT) degree accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), which provides the required educational preparation for a professional career as an athletic trainer. The MS-AT curriculum is grounded in evidence-based practice and features hands-on learning. Faculty incorporate technology into the curriculum through the Simulation Teaching and Research Center, a state-of-the-art simulation facility at the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences that enhances athletic training education. Athletic training students practice skills relevant to the current practice of athletic training in a controlled simulation environment.

Athletic training students enrolled in the MS-AT are required to complete a minimum of 800 clinical education hours in a variety of settings in addition to their didactic curriculum.  Student’s complete clinical education experiences at local high schools, rehabilitation clinics, orthopedic physicians’ offices, and with FIU National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I athletic teams. FIU athletic training students have also completed internships with the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), the National American Soccer League (NASL), Major League Soccer (MLS), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The Department of Athletic Training also offers a professional clinical Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) degree program that meets the post-professional education needs of athletic trainers to enhance patient-centered care, outcomes, and quality of life for patients and physically active individuals across the lifespan. The DAT program is for athletic trainers previously certified through the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Board of Certification who seek advanced athletic training education and clinical skills on the doctoral level. The majority of the curriculum is offered in an online format. Of the 48 credits included in the DAT program, 42 (87.5%) credits are offered online and 6 (12.5%) are offered face-to-face. The 6 face-to-face credits require students to attend class on the Modesto A. Maidique campus during each summer. The DAT affords athletic trainers with the opportunity to obtain education specifically designed to achieve their career goals. Athletic trainers will complete Advanced Individualized Clinical Residency courses (12 credits), which are tailor-made for each individual athletic trainer.

The FIU Department of Athletic Training was the first to develop and implement the professional MS-AT degree in the state of Florida. FIU continues to be on the forefront of athletic training education by developing and implementing the first post-professional DAT degree program in the southeast region. Athletic training at FIU is truly Worlds Ahead. Please peruse this site for additional information. And, visit us often as we regularly update our website.
