M.S. Degree in Speech-Language Pathology
To be considered for admission to the graduate program, all applicants need to meet the minimum admission standards set by the University. These standards requirements are:
- A Bachelor's Degree
- A 3.0 GPA for the last 60 hours of undergraduate study
- For applicants whose primary language is not English the TOEFL is required. The passing requirements for the TOEFL are 550 on the paper test or 213 on the computer version.
PREREQUISITES
Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a discipline different from Communication Sciences and Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology must complete additional admission requirements. Prior to acceptance, applicants need to successfully complete 9 prerequisite courses or their equivalents. These courses are:
- SPA 4112 Phonetics (or LIN 4214 Phonetics, offered through the Linguistics Department)
- SPA 4002 Survey of Communication Disorders
- SPA 4101 Anatomy & Physiology of Speech and Hearing
- SPA 4101L Anatomy & Physiology of Speech and Hearing Lab
- SPA 4004 Introduction to Speech & Language Devlpt & Disorders
- SPA 4011 Speech and Hearing Science
- SPA 4050 Clinical Management in Communication Disorders
- SPA 4030 Introduction to Audiology
- LIN 3013 General Linguistics
These courses are offered as part of a Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology offered by the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders. By applying to this certificate you will be able to complete all 9 prerequisite courses. To receive the certificate, you must successfully complete all 9 courses (25 credits) with a GPA of 2.0 and a minimum grade of C in each class. Please note that successful completion of the certificate does not guarantee acceptance into the master’s program. To apply for the Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology, please go to:

Fill out and print the form and submit it to the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, Room HLS-I 146 with a copy of your transcripts.
If you only need a few of these classes and expect to complete them within one semester, you may enroll as a Non-Degree Seeking student. To apply on-line go to the FIU webpage, click on "Registration", then click on the "Non-Degree Student" section. You can complete the Non-Degree Seeking Student Form and submit it on-line. If you need to take all nine courses or cannot complete all courses needed within one semester, you will need to apply to our Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology. FIU will not allow you to register as a Non-Degree Seeking student for more than one semester.
