The program was approved by the Florida Board of Regents in July 1978, to grant the degree of Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management.
On Thursday, June 12, 2008, the FIU Board of Trustees approved the budget reduction plan. This plan includes
phasing out of the following programs:
BS in Health Sciences
BS in Health Information Management
Post-Professional MS in Athletic Training

The Health Information Management Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Graduates are eligible to apply to write the national certification examination. Upon the successful completion of this examination, the individual becomes a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
The Health Information Management professional contributes to the health care needs of the individual and the community, and is recognized as a key team member in the medical field. The R.H.I.A. is a qualified professional manager who develops patient information systems, participates in research, and establishes a data base for health care statistics to promote and ensure high-quality patient care. On a daily basis, R.H.I.A. is responsible for processing health information, coding information for reimbursement purposes and protecting the patient's right to confidentiality. Interaction with administrators, medical staff and health care providers places the R.H.I.A. in a unique position among all professionals involved with health care from local to national levels. |
