The program was approved by the Florida Board of Regents in July 1978, to grant the degree of Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management.
A moratorium has been placed on admissions to the BS HIM program for the 2008-2009 academic year.
The Health Information Management Program is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the Council on Education of the American Health Information Management Association. Graduates are eligible to apply to write the national certification examination. Upon the successful completion of this examination, the individual becomes a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
The Health Information Management professional contributes to the health care needs of the individual and the community, and is recognized as a key team member in the medical field. The R.H.I.A. is a qualified professional manager who develops patient information systems, participates in research, and establishes a data base for health care statistics to promote and ensure high-quality patient care. On a daily basis, R.H.I.A. is responsible for processing health information, coding information for reimbursement purposes and protecting the patient's right to confidentiality. Interaction with administrators, medical staff and health care providers places the R.H.I.A. in a unique position among all professionals involved with health care from local to himtional levels. |
