Is the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences (NWCNHS) Generic BSN Track accredited?

Yes. The BSN Track is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), One Dupont Circle, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036-1120, (202) 887-8476, and approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing, (4052 Bald Cypress Way, BIN CO2, Tallahassee, FL 32399, 850-245-4125).

I am an applicant who is transferring credits from a Florida college(s). How do I prepare myself academically?

Applicants who take prerequisite courses at a public Florida college(s) are strongly encouraged to complete the Associate of Arts (AA) degree before transferring credits to FIU. Students who enter FIU without an AA degree must meet the FIU core curriculum requirements and must satisfy State of Florida mandated Gordon rule and foreign language requirements prior to entering the upper division nursing Track.

I am an applicant who is transferring credits from 1) out of state; and/or 2) a private college or university. How do I prepare myself academically?

Students who enter FIU without an AA degree, transfer from out-of-state, or transfer from a private college or university must meet the FIU University Core Curriculum (UCC) requirements and must satisfy State of Florida mandated Gordon rule and foreign language requirements prior to entering the upper division nursing Track.

How many credits can I transfer from another university or college?

You can transfer up to 60 credits from another university or college. Those credits must meet the FIU core curriculum requirements and must satisfy the State of Florida mandated Gordon rule requirements.

What is a PDA?

PDA stands for Panther Degree Audit. It is an automated degree audit at FIU that monitors your progress through the University, keeping track of what requirements you have fulfilled and what requirements you still have to complete. You cannot graduate until all the sections are completed. You should print your PDA report at least once a semester and review your PDA for accuracy. Take your PDA with you when you see your advisor. You can obtain your PDA online through my.fiu.edu and click on the link under Academics that says Panther Degree Audit. Once you open this, click on Expand All to view which requirements are completed, which are in progress, and which need to be completed.

What is the Gordon Rule?

I am an applicant who has a previous baccalaureate degree (not in nursing). Am I required to meet the FIU’s core curriculum, Gordon rule (the general education requirements)?

No.

Can I submit an application to the Generic BSN Track while I am still completing my prerequisite courses?

Yes. The nursing prerequisites and general education requirements can be in progress during the spring semester prior to the fall semester you wish to be admitted; however, they must ALL be completed by the end of the spring semester. Once all prerequisites and general education courses are completed, you must have official transcripts sent again to FIU and a final copy sent to the NWCNHS Student Services Department.

When and how do I schedule an appointment with a Generic BSN pre-admission advisor?

Applicants are strongly urged to make an appointment to attend a Generic BSN information session at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC). Following attendance at an information session, make an individual advising appointment with the Pre-Nursing Admission Advisor, (305) 348-7703 - Follow prompts for nursing. Bring copies of all transcripts to the advising appointment for evaluation of deficiencies in state mandated requirements and/or nursing prerequisites.

What is the application deadline?

On March 15th prior to the fall semester applying. Applicants who were previously not accepted for admission must resubmit a new application packet in order to be considered for the following application cycle.

What is the procedure for selection of applicants?

The Track has limited enrollment and uses a competitive admission process based on a comprehensive evaluation. To be considered for admission, applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA (including dual enrollment and transfer courses) of 3.25 (approved by undergraduate nursing faculty on 4/25/12 ) or higher with no repeats in science prerequisite courses (including labs) because of failure, have completed science courses within the past 10 years, have met all the lower division requirements and completed 60 semester hours, have met minimum nursing entrance exam requirements , and be recommended for admission by the Undergraduate Nursing Admissions Committee.

If I meet all the admission requirements, am I assured admission to the Track?

No. The Track is highly competitive and has limited enrollment due to the Florida Board of Nursing regulations and agency requirements. We only admit 100 students annually in the fall semester.

Is financial assistance available?

Yes. Can I go part time?

No. The Generic BSN Track is full-time and “lock-step”. All entering students proceed as a cohort through to graduation.

Are the courses online?

No. But many courses are web-enhanced. For web-enhanced courses, a portion of the course (notes, quizzes, discussions) uses computer technology to deliver the course.

Is there a licensing examination for students who complete the Generic BSN Track?

Yes. The RN licensing examination is named NCLEX and is administered by the Florida Board of Nursing.
