Welcome to the Communication Sciences & Disorders Department

Dr. Monica Hugh

Welcome to the FIU Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) and thank you for your interest in our program.

The Master of Science degree program in Speech-Language Pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The CSD department admits Masters' students once per year. The annual deadline for receipt of applications is January 15. Applicants will be notified of the decisions during the spring semester. Students accepted to the program will begin enrollment in the Fall semester of each year.

The unique focus of the CSD department is one of Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CLD) and bilingualism. The goal of the department is to educate prospective speech-language pathologists (SLP) to meet the needs of multicultural individuals with communication disorders. Students matriculating in the program will benefit from the infusion of CLD throughout the curriculum, as well as coursework and clinical experiences which emphasize bilingual issues with special focus on English/Spanish and English/Haitian-Creole bilingualism.

Students will have opportunities to receive clinical education from a variety of clinical settings in the Miami metropolitan area including hospitals, schools, private practices, and community based clinics. They also will engage in research projects with faculty members.

Additionally, we offer 28 credits of prerequisite coursework at the graduate level for applicants without a major in Communication Sciences and Disorders via the Graduate Certificate program in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). These courses are designed to provide individuals without bachelor degrees in speech language pathology the appropriate education necessary for admission into the Masters’ program.
