Welcome to the information website of Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences’ PhD in Nursing Program at Florida International University (FIU). I am so pleased that you have decided to join us, and I commend you for your intentional desire to further advance your career in nursing!

The College prepares diverse health care professionals to provide and lead in the delivery of high quality, accessible, culturally competent care within a highly technological and global environment. The College promotes, expands and validates scientific knowledge and evidence based practice through inter-professional research and practice with strong commitment in community engagement.

The PhD in Nursing Program's purpose is to develop leaders in generating and applying the science needed to guide nursing practice. Graduates have the knowledge and skills to direct and guide the application of evidence-based health care findings to improve the health of people from diverse cultures. Students in the program pursue individualized courses of study under the mentorship of research active faculty. A major program emphasis is the preparation of PhD-prepared nursing leaders who are poised to improve the health status of their communities and contribute to the advancement of nursing science locally and globally.

The PhD in Nursing Program has long been recognized for promoting excellence in the areas of education, research and practice. Our vision is to reach the pinnacles of academic, professional, and research excellence, as we devote our attention to the increasing health needs of minority and undeserved/vulnerable populations.

Moreover, our pedagogical values are student-centered. We encourage students to engage in active, self-directed learning. Throughout their studies here, PhD students are encouraged to evaluate existing and new evidence-based nursing practices, to contribute to growing scientific knowledge bases, and to expand their critical thinking skills in an effort to respond to the rapid changes of 21st century health care delivery within complex environments. Simultaneously, students are encouraged to develop innovative, creative, compassionate, caring, and evidence-based approaches in every facet of their nursing care.

This approach to learning is but one distinct characteristic of our philosophy. Our diverse faculty members are nationally acclaimed for their research on the health care needs of minority and under-served populations and their expertise in culturally competent care, thus nurturing student leadership development and enhancing collaborative ties with our partners at local, national, and international levels. We invite you to learn more about our PhD in Nursing Program by visiting our website and we look forward to welcoming your contributions in the exciting growth of our nursing community.
