Admission Requirements

A prospective student must meet all admission requirements stipulated in the University’s Graduate Policies and Procedures. In addition, the requirements for admission to the PhD in Nursing program are as follows:

  • A master’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution
  • A master’s program grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 or higher
  • Master’s level statistics course
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The GRE must have been taken within the last five (5) years of the date postmarked on the application. If you took the GRE prior to 5 years and your combined score is high, call the FIU PhD in Nursing Program Office at 305-348-7718.

Computer-based testing (CBT) is now available at test centers worldwide. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come basis. To register, call 1-800-GRE-CALL.

  • Applicants, whose native language is not English, must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and obtain a minimum of 80 on the IBT TOEFL (equivalent to 550 on the paper based version) or 213 on the computer based version.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure or RN licensure with Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) certification in the State of Florida. The license must remain current throughout the program.*
  • Current professional liability insurance. The graduate student must maintain liability insurance throughout the program.*

*International students are waived of the Florida RN licensure and professional liability insurance requirements.

Admission Evaluation

The Admissions Committee evaluates the following criteria for student admissions to the doctoral program.

*Someone who can speak to applicant’s potential for research and scholarship, and ability to function under pressure.

Application Process

Applicants must complete the following steps in order to be considered for admission:

  • Request an official transcript of records from each college or university attended for undergraduate and graduate work. Transcripts must be sent to both.

  • Submit the following to FIU College of Nursing & Health Sciences:
    • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure or RN licensure with ARNP certification (if applicable)
    • Current professional liability insurance (if applicable)
    • A statement of applicant’s goals for pursuing the PhD degree in nursing. This statement must be typed, double-spaced, narrative format. Please see STATEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL GOALS guidelines and visit our RESEARCH INVESTIGATORS page to review our Nursing Faculty areas of research expertise.
    • Three (3) letters of recommendation from educational, administrative, or collegial capacity who have worked closely with you in the past five years. One from each:
      1. Academic/Collegial
      2. Supervisor
      3. Co-Worker
      There must be clear evidence in your application, in your past academic record, and in your letters of recommendation of your research ability or potential.
  • Submit GRE scores and TOEFL scores (if applicable) for admission evaluation to both:
    1. FIU Graduate Admissions Office; and
    2. FIU Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences PhD Nursing Program Office
    The College Doctoral Program in Nursing Admissions Committee (DPNAC) will review the credentials of all applicants.
  • Upon completion of the application process, a satisfactory face-to-face interview by members of the DPNAC.

Submit all of the required documents (transcripts, GRE scores, TOEFL scores, letters of recommendation, statement of goals, RN licensure and liability insurance) for admission evaluation. The application and required documents do not have to be sent as one package to the Graduate Admissions Office or FIU College of Nursing and Health Sciences; however, all required documents MUST be received on or before the deadline date.

You may submit your application with a note that the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores will be submitted upon receipt; however, a final admission decision will not be made until the official scores are received. Educational Testing Service will report your scores to the University you have specified.

The application file must be complete before the College DPNAC will consider the applicant for admission. The application and supporting documents must be received on or before:

  • February 15 for Fall Admission
  • August 1 for Spring Admission
  • December 1 1 for Summer Admission

If the application and supporting documents are not received by the appropriate deadline, the application will be considered for admission in the following term.

Students are required to submit to state and federal background checks before entry into clinical areas. Clinical agencies may also require drug testing on entry to the agency. Findings in background checks may affect a student's ability to participate in clinical experiences and complete the program. Please click here to review the Florida Statute (effective July 1, 2009) related to the reasons the Florida Board of Nursing shall refuse to issue a license, certificate or registration and shall refuse to admit a candidate for examination.
