Dr. Tami Thomas Appointed as Associate Dean of Research,
Faculty Development & Director of the PhD Program

nursePresidentaward

Dr. Tami Thomas has accepted the appointment as Associate Dean of Research, Faculty Development and Director of the PhD Program effective January 1, 2018. Currently, Dr. Thomas is serving as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences. She has served as our Associate Dean of Academic Affairs since January 2015. However, she has shown an increasing affinity for leading the Colleges research and faculty development activities, and the PhD in Nursing Program. She also is Principal Investigator/Project Director of two major federally-funded grants which total $2.8 million. Dr. Thomas developed and implements an outstanding and exemplary faculty development program in her role as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs within the College, and will continue in this role. Dr. Thomas has already begun to serve on several University committees that require the expertise of a senior investigator and administrator. It is important that the College place an experienced researcher who understands research program development in a position to lead the Colleges research endeavors and the PhD in Nursing Program if we are to make significant progress in meeting FIUs strategic goals.

Dr. Jennifer Doherty-Restrepo Appointed Director of Accreditation by Provost Furton

Jennifer Doherty-Restrepo recently accepted the position of Director of Accreditation in the FIU Office of the Provost. Jennifer is a very talented, diplomatic, and bright young woman and I expect that she will become one of the greatest assets to Academic Affairs, as she has been a tremendous asset to the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

As the founding Program Director and Chairperson of the Department of Athletic Training, Jennifer and her faculty achieved numerous accomplishments. She and her faculty developed strong clinical partnerships within the community and across the country, and created quality clinical education and internship opportunities for students, many of which led to employment. Just in the last three years alone, our FIU Athletic Training Program placed 18 students with 12 different teams in the National Football League. And, an alumna was hired as the first, full-time female athletic trainer by the Kansas City Chiefs. This is quite an accomplishment and a strong testament to the amazing education afforded to our athletic training students. Continuing her innovative leadership, Jennifer established athletic training faculty practice at FIU in collaboration with Student Affairs. She secured funding to fully support two clinical instructor lines in the Department of Athletic Training. These two clinical instructors provide athletic training healthcare for all FIU students as well as intramural and club sport participants. Jennifer also secured space in the new Wellness and Recreation Center for an Athletic Training Clinic, which will open October 1, 2017.
