Transfers & Credits
- How many credits can I transfer from another university or college?
You can transfer up to 60 credits from another university or college. Those credits must meet the University Core Curriculum (UCC) requirements and must satisfy the State of Florida mandated Gordon Rule requirements.
- I am an applicant who is transferring credits. How do I prepare myself academically?
- If transferring from a Florida state college, community college or university: applicants are strongly encouraged to complete the Associate of Arts (AA) degree before transferring credits to FIU.
- If transferring without an AA – OR – from an out-of-state or private college, community college or university: applicants MUST meet the University Core Curriculum (UCC) and satisfy State of Florida-mandated Gordon Rule and foreign language requirements prior to entering the upper division nursing program.
- Will my Associate of Arts (AA) degree from a public school outside the state of Florida be recognized at FIU?
No. FIU only accepts AA degrees from Florida regionally accredited schools. However, classes may be applied to the University Core Curriculum (UCC) requirements and nursing prerequisites. Courses are evaluated on a case by case basis.
- Is an Associate in Science (AS) degree equivalent to an Associate of Arts (AA) degree?
No.
- What is the Gordon Rule?
Florida State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.030, the Gordon Rule, requires students to successfully complete 12 credits of writing-intensive and 6 credits of math-intensive courses prior to receipt of an Associate of Arts (AA) degree or entry into the upper division of a Florida public university or college. These courses must be completed with grades of “C” or better and fulfilled within the first 60 credits. Gordon Rule courses are identified on the University Core Curriculum.
- What is a PDA?
PDA stands for Panther Degree Audit. It is an automated degree audit for FIU-enrolled students that monitors your progress through the university, keeping track of what requirements you have fulfilled, and what requirements you still must complete. You cannot graduate until all the sections are completed. You should print your PDA report at least once a semester and review your PDA for accuracy. Take your PDA with you when you see your advisor. You can obtain your PDA online through MyFIU and click on the link under Academics that says Panther Degree Audit. Once you open this, click on Expand All to view which requirements are completed, which are in progress, and which need to be completed.
- I am an applicant who has a previous baccalaureate degree (not in nursing). Am I required to meet the Gordon Rule (general education requirements) of FIU’s University Core Curriculum?
No.
- Is there a licensing examination for students who complete the BSN programs?
Yes. The RN licensing examination is named the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN®) and can be taken in any state upon completion of the BSN degree. The NCLEX-RN is administered through the Florida Board of Nursing in the state of Florida.
TEAS Exam
- Who is required to take the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) exam?
Applicants to FIU’s Traditional BSN, FEP to BSN/MSN and Accelerated Option BSN programs are required to take the TEAS. Absolutely no exemptions or substitutions are made for this admission requirement.
- Do I need to apply to FIU before I can take the TEAS exam?
No. Also, you do not need to be an active FIU student to take the exam at the FIU Testing Center.
- Which version of the TEAS should I take?
Refer to the Admission Requirements section on the program page to confirm the required test edition.
- How can I study for the TEAS?
Study manuals, practice assessment packages and other study materials are available at the ATI TEAS store.
- How can I verify that my official TEAS scores were received?
Applicants will receive an email confirming their application status.
- Do I have to submit my TEAS scores again if I reapply to the program?
TEAS scores must be submitted with each application packet for the nursing program. We are unable to retrieve materials from previous application cycles. It is the responsibility of the applicants to provide the scores each time. Test scores are valid for a total of two years.
- How many times can I take the TEAS?
The Undergraduate Nursing Department permits two (2) attempts per application cycle, with a minimum 30-day waiting period between the attempts. The FIU Testing Center requires a minimum 30-day waiting period between attempts. Other testing sites may have their own policies regarding how often or how many times one may take the TEAS. Consult directly with the testing site to clarify.
Note: Your scores are reflected on your Individual Performance Profile, which is accessible as a PDF. Any additional attempts would be null and void, even if you were unable to meet the minimum requirements in the first two attempts.
- Do I need to submit the scores from each TEAS attempt?
Yes. ALL attempts taken in the same application cycle (specific to each program) must be submitted before the program’s application deadline date to ensure that the best overall score is used for your application. Late scores are not accepted.
Note: Official test results include the number of attempts made on any version of the TEAS, as well as the number of days between the current and last attempt. - Can sections from different TEAS attempts be combined for the best overall score?
No. FIU Nursing will not cross-combine the best score per section from different attempts. Instead, we will sum the Reading, Math, Science, and English sections from each individual attempt to determine the single best overall attempt. Once the best attempt has been identified, the lower attempt is removed, and the best TEAS score will be used for the applicant’s evaluation.
Traditional BSN
- Can I apply to the Traditional BSN program while I am still completing my prerequisite courses?
Yes. The nursing prerequisites and general education requirements can be in progress during the Spring semester prior to the Fall semester and during the Summer semester prior to the Spring semester you wish to be admitted; however, they must ALL be completed by the end of the Spring semester. Once all prerequisites and general education courses are completed, you must have official transcripts sent again to FIU Undergraduate Admissions.
- If I meet all the admission requirements, am I assured admission to the Traditional BSN program?
No. The program is highly competitive and has limited enrollment due to Florida Board of Nursing regulations and agency requirements. We only admit 120 students annually in the Fall semester and 120 students annually in the Spring semester.
- Can a Traditional BSN student go part-time?
No. The program is full-time and “lock-step.” All students admitted in each application cycle proceed as a cohort through to graduation.
- Are the Traditional BSN courses online?
No. But many courses are web-enhanced, using computer technology to deliver portions of the course (e.g., notes, quizzes, discussions).
- In which campus is the Traditional BSN program hosted?
The Traditional BSN program courses are held at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC).
Accelerated Option BSN
- If I meet all the admission requirements, am I assured admission to the track? No. The track is highly competitive and has limited enrollment due to Florida Board of Nursing regulations and agency requirements. The student/faculty ratio is mandated to protect patient safety in the clinical setting.
- If I have a sponsoring hospital, am I required to work at the hospital after I graduate? Yes. The hospital will require you to sign a contract to work in that facility for a specified time period.
- Can I go part-time in the track? No. The program is full-time and “lock-step.” All students admitted in each application cycle proceed as a cohort through to graduation.
- Are the AO BSN courses online? Some courses are offered online and many courses are web-enhanced. Web-enhanced courses use computer technology to deliver portions of the course (e.g., notes, quizzes, discussions).
- In which campus is the AO BSN program hosted?
The AO BSN program courses are held at the Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC).
Foreign Educated Physician to BSN/MSN
- Am I going to take the NCLEX before finishing the entire FEP to BSN/MSN program?
Yes. The BSN is granted at the year and a half mark. The RN licensing examination is named the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN®) and can be taken in any state upon completion of the BSN degree. The NCLEX-RN is administered through the Florida Board of Nursing in the state of Florida.
- Is there a minimum GPA requirement before applying for the program?
Yes. The minimum GPA is 2.5. We invite you to refer to the Admissions page as well as to sign up for an info session and, ultimately, meet with the FEP to BSN/MSN advisor to learn more about the minimum requirements for the program.
- Do I have to complete all the prerequisites before the application deadline, or can I take some of the prerequisites while in the program?
ALL prerequisites must be completed by the end of the Spring semester to be eligible for admission for the Fall term. A minimum grade of "C" is required in these courses.
- Is it better to start with AO to BSN and apply for BSN to MSN afterward or to apply directly for FEP to BSN/MSN?
It’s recommended for an FEP who wants to complete the program with both a BSN and an MSN to apply for the FEP to BSN/MSN. Those who want to stop at the BSN should apply for the AO.
- Can some of my medical school courses transfer into the program?
No. A medical degree is a minimum admission requirement. Medical degree courses will not transfer into the nursing degree program. Moreover, FEPs will also need to complete admission prerequisites. Prerequisites must have been taken within the last 10 years.
- Based on what criteria do you select the applicants for your program?
The BSN program is a specialized admissions status program; and therefore, admission is competitive based on previous academic performance, utilizing a holistic student approach, and additional criteria for entry into the BSN Program. A criterion-based point system is used for the admission evaluation of applicants to the BSN program. We invite you to refer to the Admissions page as well as to sign up for an info session and, ultimately, meet with the FEP to BSN/MSN advisor to learn more about the minimum requirements for the program.
