You can transfer up to 60 credits from another university or college. Those credits must meet the University Core Curriculum (UCC) requirements and must satisfy the State of Florida mandated Gordon Rule requirements.

• If transferring from a Florida state college, community college or university: applicants are strongly encouraged to complete the Associate of Arts (AA) degree before transferring credits to FIU.
• If transferring without an AA – OR – from an out-of-state or private college, community college or university: applicants MUST meet the University Core Curriculum (UCC) and satisfy State of Florida-mandated Gordon Rule and foreign language requirements prior to entering the upper division nursing program.

No. FIU only accepts AA degrees from Florida regionally accredited schools. However, classes may be applied to the University Core Curriculum (UCC) requirements and nursing prerequisites.  Courses are evaluated on a case by case basis.

Florida State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.030, the Gordon Rule, requires students to successfully complete 12 credits of writing-intensive and 6 credits of math-intensive courses prior to receipt of an Associate of Arts (AA) degree or entry into the upper division of a Florida public university or college. These courses must be completed with grades of “C” or better and fulfilled within the first 60 credits. Gordon Rule courses are identified on the University Core Curriculum.

PDA stands for Panther Degree Audit. It is an automated degree audit for FIU-enrolled students that monitors your progress through the university, keeping track of what requirements you have fulfilled, and what requirements you still must complete. You cannot graduate until all the sections are completed. You should print your PDA report at least once a semester and review your PDA for accuracy. Take your PDA with you when you see your advisor. You can obtain your PDA online through MyFIU and click on the link under Academics that says Panther Degree Audit. Once you open this, click on Expand All to view which requirements are completed, which are in progress, and which need to be completed.

Yes. The RN licensing examination is named the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN^®) and can be taken in any state upon completion of the BSN degree. The NCLEX-RN is administered through the Florida Board of Nursing in the state of Florida.

Applicants to FIU’s Traditional BSN, FEP to BSN/MSN and Accelerated Option BSN programs are required to take the TEAS. Absolutely no exemptions or substitutions are made for this admission requirement.

No.  Also, you do not need to be an active FIU student to take the exam at the FIU Testing Center.

Applicants will receive an email confirming their application status.

TEAS scores must be submitted with each application packet for the nursing program. We are unable to retrieve materials from previous application cycles. It is the responsibility of the applicants to provide the scores each time. Test scores are valid for a total of two years.

The Undergraduate Nursing Department permits two (2) attempts per application cycle, with a minimum 30-day waiting period between the attempts. The FIU Testing Center requires a minimum 30-day waiting period between attempts. Other testing sites may have their own policies regarding how often or how many times one may take the TEAS. Consult directly with the testing site to clarify.

Note: Your scores are reflected on your Individual Performance Profile, which is accessible as a PDF. Any additional attempts would be null and void, even if you were unable to meet the minimum requirements in the first two attempts.

Yes. ALL attempts taken in the same application cycle (specific to each program) must be submitted before the program’s application deadline date to ensure that the best overall score is used for your application. Late scores are not accepted.

No.  FIU Nursing will not cross-combine the best score per section from different attempts. Instead, we will sum the Reading, Math, Science, and English sections from each individual attempt to determine the single best overall attempt. Once the best attempt has been identified, the lower attempt is removed, and the best TEAS score will be used for the applicant’s evaluation.

Yes. The nursing prerequisites and general education requirements can be in progress during the Spring semester prior to the Fall semester and during the Summer semester prior to the Spring semester you wish to be admitted; however, they must ALL be completed by the end of the Spring semester. Once all prerequisites and general education courses are completed, you must have official transcripts sent again to FIU Undergraduate Admissions.

No. The program is highly competitive and has limited enrollment due to Florida Board of Nursing regulations and agency requirements. We only admit 120 students annually in the Fall semester and 120 students annually in the Spring semester.

No. The program is full-time and “lock-step.” All students admitted in each application cycle proceed as a cohort through to graduation.

No. But many courses are web-enhanced, using computer technology to deliver portions of the course (e.g., notes, quizzes, discussions).

The Traditional BSN program courses are held at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC).

The AO BSN program courses are held at the Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC).

Yes. The BSN is granted at the year and a half mark. ALL prerequisites must be completed by the end of the Spring semester to be eligible for admission for the Fall term. A minimum grade of "C" is required in these courses.

It’s recommended for an FEP who wants to complete the program with both a BSN and an MSN to apply for the FEP to BSN/MSN. Those who want to stop at the BSN should apply for the AO.

No. A medical degree is a minimum admission requirement. Medical degree courses will not transfer into the nursing degree program. Moreover, FEPs will also need to complete admission prerequisites. Prerequisites must have been taken within the last 10 years.

The BSN program is a specialized admissions status program; and therefore, admission is competitive based on previous academic performance, utilizing a holistic student approach, and additional criteria for entry into the BSN Program. A criterion-based point system is used for the admission evaluation of applicants to the BSN program.
