Occupational Therapy

We all put our pants on one leg at a time. But for some people with physical, cognitive, or mental disabilities – such as children with autism, individuals with a stroke or victims of trauma – doing the simplest activities we take for granted can be a monumental task.

Occupational Therapy is a high-demand rehabilitative discipline that helps these people acquire the skills to perform daily activities and lead fuller lives with functional independence.

FIU Occupational Therapy’s entry-level Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MS-OT) program prepares graduates by emphasizing evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary collaborative learning, research, cultural awareness, fieldwork engagement and leading technology so you can develop effective solutions that facilitate participations for the people we serve.

Whether studying mobility issues among seniors, helping patients regain skills after injury, or aiding the development of children with disabilities, our faculty and graduates are on the front lines of practice and research to help restore people’s way of living.

As one of the six departments of the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences, FIU Occupational Therapy promotes effective interprofessional collaboration across fields, advanced research in healthcare delivery and evidence-based practice, as well as significant engagement with communities and partners around the world.

Licensing Eligibility

Graduates of the FIU MS-OT program are eligible to become an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR)*, upon passing the national certification examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

Most states require licensure to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination.

*A felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT Certification Examination or attain state licensure. Any student who is in this circumstance should investigate further before attending Occupational Therapy school.

Graduation Requirements

  • The student must satisfactorily complete all didactic and fieldwork requirements within the OT program guidelines.
  • Have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0.
  • Meet University deadlines for graduation applications.
  • Students must be enrolled in courses during the semester they graduate. Students cannot graduate the same semester they are re-admitted to the university.
