Our History

Humble Beginnings

As the new school on the block, FIU was initially overlooked as a premier destination for higher education, especially when compared to more established institutions across Florida. However, through perseverance, vision, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, the university’s early faculty and leadership defied the odds. They made bold, strategic decisions rooted in opportunity, equity, and community impact that laid the foundation for FIU to become the leading public institution in South Florida. Their determination transformed FIU from a modest startup into a beacon of access, innovation, and academic success.

Linda Simunek, the first Dean of the College of Nursing

One of the most influential deans in the history of Florida International University played a pivotal role alongside President Modesto A. Maidique in shaping the institution’s identity and long-term vision. Through steadfast leadership, this dean helped lay the foundation for what FIU represents today, championing a culture of perseverance, academic excellence, and innovation. Their contributions continue to inspire a forward-thinking, inclusive, and impact-driven university community.

Growth & Progress

Over the course of the following decades, the units traveled parallel paths expanding their respective program offerings to reflect the growing healthcare demands of society.

The Master of Science in Nursing tracks, Nurse Anesthetist Practice unit, PhD in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs, along with the innovative Foreign-Educated Physician to Nurse program, were added to the School of Nursing.

The Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences & Disorders departments joined Physical Therapy on the Health Sciences side.

Transforming for the Future

The story came full circle in 2006, when the School of Nursing and the Health Sciences division officially merged to form the College of Nursing & Health Sciences. This unification marked a transformative moment in FIU’s history, expanding the College’s academic reach with the addition of the Athletic Training and Health Services Administration departments. Since then, the College has continued to grow through the development of state-of-the-art simulation centers and cutting-edge research facilities that enhance hands-on learning and interdisciplinary collaboration. Today, we remain committed to challenging our students, advancing healthcare education, and carrying forward the same bold spirit that helped establish FIU as a national university of choice.
