The FIU Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curriculum features a progressive, problem-oriented approach and includes rigorous coverage of the full range of basic medical and clinical sciences, hands-on skills and research relevant to the current practice of physical therapy.

We’re excited to announce updates to our Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program curriculum designed to help you reach your goals faster and more efficiently. Our curriculum has been streamlined without compromising quality, allowing you to complete your degree in less time, reducing housing and living expenses.

The FIU Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curriculum is structured to facilitate a seamless transition into professional practice. The program’s timeline enables students to participate in FIU Spring Commencement, pursue the July National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE), and qualify for Fall residency opportunities. The final Spring semester features several significant milestones, including Research Day, the DPT Job Fair, the Clinical Hooding Ceremony, the White Coat Ceremony, and Spring Commencement, marking students’ transition from academic preparation to professional practice.

DPT Project

You have three semesters of DPT project. You will be assigned to a faculty member to assist in their research. Please remember that there is no assigned time for this course so please work closely with your faculty mentor to make sure you are available when requested. Plan your work around the course and not the course around your work. The culmination of this research experience will be a paper formatted for publication and/or oral/poster presentation of your work.

Graduation

Students may apply for graduation in accordance with university-wide procedures.

The Chair, or his or her designee, will support the application if the student shows evidence of the ability to complete their program of studies by the graduation date applied for.

Informed consent relative to participation in instructional activities.

Students are required to participate in lecture-demonstrations, laboratory classes, clinical observation, and participation in clinical treatments as part of their training to become physical therapists. Many of these activities may pose more than a trivial risk to students’ physical and/or mental health and comfort.

Students should expect to come into close physical contact with fellow students as well as wear clothing that maximizes exposure while maintaining modesty.
