The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at FIU is a limited access and highly competitive program. Students typically apply for full admission after completing prerequisite courses, an entrance exam, and other requirements.
FIU offers a Pre-Nursing Pathway for First Time in College (FTIC) applicants to help guide their journey toward full admission into the BSN program.
First Time in College (FTIC) Applicants
First Time in College (FTIC) applicants should apply to FIU through the Common App. There is a non-refundable application fee of $30. Allow 20-30 minutes to complete your application. You can save your application and come back to it later. Make sure to have your high school and previous college information readily available.
When an FTIC applies to FIU and selects Nursing as their intended major on the application, they will be prompted to select a second, alternative major from the following list of majors whose coursework aligns with the pre-requisite coursework for the BSN program:
- Health Services Administration
- Liberal Studies – Health and Human Concern
- Rehabilitation & Recreational Therapy
- Psychology
- Social Work
- Exploratory/NURHS
A limited number of FTIC applicants will be accepted directly into the BSN program in their first year as “Pre-Nursing” majors. FTIC students who are admitted to the BSN program as “Pre-Nursing” majors must meet all academic milestones in order to remain enrolled in the program and will be eligible for automatic full admission to the BSN program if/when they meet the minimum progression requirements.
FTIC applicants who are not accepted as a “Pre-Nursing” major in the BSN program may be accepted to the alternative major selected on their application and flagged with a “Pre-Nursing Pathway” designation. If they meet pre-nursing academic milestones, these students will have the opportunity to apply for full admission to the BSN program upon completion of pre-requisite courses, an entrance exam, and other application requirements. Note that admission is not guaranteed and is highly competitive as a very limited number of seats are available.
Students can only be assigned to a “Pre-Nursing” major or pathway at the time of admission to FIU. Students cannot switch into a “Pre-Nursing” major or pathway from a different major.
First Time in College (FTIC) Students Admitted to the BSN Program
A limited number of FTIC applicants are accepted directly into the BSN program in their first year as “Pre-Nursing” majors.
FTIC students who were admitted directly to the BSN program as a “Pre-Nursing” major must meet all academic milestones to remain enrolled in the program. If they fail to meet the milestones, they will lose their eligibility to enroll in the pre-requisite courses for application to the BSN.
FTIC students who were admitted to the BSN program as “Pre-Nursing” majors will need to complete the application requirements for full admission to the BSN program. If they meet the minimum progression requirements, they will not be required to submit a formal application.
First Time in College (FTIC) Students Admitted to their Alternate Choice Major
FTIC Nursing applicants who are accepted to their alternate choice major will have a “Pre-Nursing Pathway” designation placed on their record. These students will have the opportunity to later apply for full admission to the BSN program. However, full admission to the BSN program is highly competitive and not guaranteed, as a very limited number of seats are available.
To remain on the “Pre-Nursing Pathway,” these students must meet the pre-nursing academic milestones. If they fail to meet the milestones, they will lose their eligibility to enroll in the pre-requisite courses for application to the BSN.
Students choosing this option should pursue coursework that satisfies both the requirements for their assigned major, as well as the academic milestones and pre-requisites for application to the BSN program. Upon completion of the pre-requisite courses, an entrance exam, and other application requirements, they may apply for full admission to the BSN program.
If a student is accepted to their alternate choice major and they are not interested in pursuing the “Pre-Nursing Pathway,” they should contact CNHS Advising to have the “Pre-Nursing Pathway” designation removed from their record. If they are no longer pursing the “Pre-Nursing Pathway,” they may choose to work with their assigned academic advisor to explore other majors.
Academic Milestones for “Pre-Nursing” Students
First-time in College (FTIC) students accepted directly into the BSN “Pre-Nursing” major, and those who are accepted into their alternate major with a “Pre-Nursing Pathway” designation will have access to the pre-requisite courses. To remain eligible for progression in the pre-requisite courses, students must meet the following minimum requirement milestones. Students who miss any of the following milestones will be redirected out of their pre-nursing major or pathway/designation and will be ineligible to apply for full admission to the BSN program.
