I had a group of friends who told me stories about their family members attending Florida International University. They told me about their experience in the College of Nursing, and how much they got from it. They said the atmosphere and the teachers were welcoming, so I was curious. I decided to give it a shot, and I never regretted it. I'm from Haiti, so I lived through the earthquake, and I saw many people lose their lives. I saw people who needed help, and that experience led me into the nursing field. I was marked by that experience. I got to the United States in April 2012, and I started reading medical journals. I saw the marked difference between nurses and doctors, and I liked how close the nurses were to their patients. They talked to their patients at their bedside, and they tried to give personalized care to them. I decided to give it a shot, and I chose FIU because of what I read about them online. I decided I wanted to commit to nursing after seeing what FIU stood for in the elevator of the nursing building. I was intimidated by how big the campus was at first, but everyone made me feel at home. The teachers were respectful and humble, and they truly wanted you to learn. They took time to answer your questions, and they were open with their students. The teachers at FIU were one thing I loved about the school. It took me some time to decide what I wanted to work in, but I ended up applying for a job in Miami to work with individuals who suffer from cerebral palsy. I take care of my patients, asses them, give them medicine, and help them out. It can be stressful at times, but it's a rewarding job that I'm passionate about. I'm thinking of going back to school for a psychiatric nurse degree, and I would love to go back to FIU for it.
