I always liked helping people, so I went into nursing. I had finished a basic nursing school degree, and I wanted to get a bachelor's degree. I saw that FIU Nursing had a program in which I could get my bachelor's degree in two years. When I went to school there, there was only one building - it is a huge campus now. After I graduated and moved to San Francisco, California, in 1979, my nursing career really took off. I opened the first AIDS inpatient unit in a hospital in the United States. I was also named the first AIDS coordinator ever. I am featured in a documentary called '5B' that tells my story. FIU Nursing has been very supportive and has given me a lot of recognition. I was awarded alumnus of the year once.
