Darlene Denise Harris, DNP

MS '99; DNP '16

FIU was known for its nursing education programs, and it offered one of the first master's degrees in nursing practice. Nursing was always my passion, and I never considered another career. My passion is to bring health literacy and healthcare to underserved populations. FIU prepared me as a provider, and it prepared me to understand and participate in research. It helped me to value my role in the community and to see how important health is. FIU nurses are embedded into the community. FIU partnered with the Miami VA, and I was part of that program. We taught new nurses about veteran care.
