BSN '21

I graduated from Broward College in 2008, and I began to work as a nurse immediately. I did some travel nursing, and I worked at a magnet hospital. I then ended up taking a full-time position in New York. Because it was a magnet hospital, nurses were required to get their BSN within two years of being hired. I started getting my bachelor's degree, but I got pregnant and moved back down to Florida. I was so close to finishing after I had my baby. I asked a bunch of people I worked with where they went to school. The consensus was FIU was the best school for a good work-life balance. My experience was great because I came in with a lot of background experience. I had a lot to pull from and a lot to reference when I was doing my papers and research. My education there tied the loose ends together in regard to what I was seeing with middle management and staff. I gained an understanding of the bigger picture outside of bedside nursing. FIU showed me what I loved about school. What I loved the most was the profound impact on me when I did my community service project. I got to work with special needs kids at a horse camp. I got to be out on the field using what I knew from pediatric nursing, and I learned how to interact with special needs kids. That experience really changed my outlook on how vast the nursing practice can be. I loved bedside nursing and could do great work through it, but I could also make a huge impact in my community. I graduated cum laude with a full-time job, two children, and a husband. It was also during the pandemic, and being able to do all of that showed me I can accomplish anything if I put my mind to it.
