I went to Florida International University because it offered a program for foreign physicians to come and become nurse practitioners. There was no university anywhere near us that offered that, and I was looking for options to work in the United States as a foreign MD. I chose to study family medicine because I felt like it was the most flexible track with the most diversity. There were more options with that certification than any other. It's worked out because ever since I graduated, I've been doing psychiatry and mental health work. My education at FIU has helped a lot. I was able to see the nursing aspect of healthcare, and it was a very different approach to patients. I actually preferred it over the training I received in medical school. We had some really outstanding professors in the BSN and MSN programs. I was a member of the Nursing Honor Society. My last year was memorable because of the advanced training I received. I was doing what I wanted to do in medicine, which was nice. There were a lot of labs where I got to practice psychical exam skills in preparation for my board exams. I enjoyed the group of people I worked with and the hands-on training we received. I still keep in touch with a handful of people I went to school with at FIU, almost on a daily basis. My advice for new students would be to focus on the basics. If a student can master the basics, everything else comes easier.
